If you want a good idea about what I’m trying to do with this site, the first post is a good place to start. Basically, the hope is to show folks that belief is never separated from art, and vice versa. The acts of creating and believing in something are intrinsically connected.
Therefore, I hope to point out moments in culture and art when this idea makes itself known. Movies, music, literature, sculpture, painting…it’s all fair game to observe and see how the themes in the artist’s work connect to existential/religious/cosmic themes that humans have been dealing with for all of recorded history. What does this movie say about life and death? When I listen to this song, is it possible that I’m actually changed when I really listen? Can a painting communicate the divine? Basically, I’m looking for what translates as emerging iconography, and it’s all in an effort to show people that faith and artistic expression couldn’t get away from each other if they tried.
As far as intent and style go, I don’t want this site to be too heavily academic. The great thing about the arts is that all people have something to contribute, and all people can come up with some pretty nice ideas. That’s why I want this place to have an easy-going tone, as if the posts were strands of a conversation between friends over coffee, sitting back, relaxing, and discussing some pretty cool stuff that happens to be all around. Keep me in check on that.
